The Bidding
At contract, South the dealer bid heart, West one one diamond,
North one spade, East pass, South three spades, West pass and North four spades.
The Play
East opened the king of hearts, the top of his partner's suit, fol- lowed by the 10, West overtaking with the queen and returning the ace, East discarding a club. West must not return a heart as it will give the declarer an opportunity to sluff in one hand and ruff in the other, therefore the jack of din- monds is returned by West which A small dummy wins with the nee. spade is returned from dummy, de- clurer winning with the 10 spot. The six of spades is returned to dummy's queen, West shows out discarding the seven of hearts.
The West hand is pretty well) marked with the king of clubs due i to the bidding. The-returning of the jack of diamonds also indicates that West may hold four diamonds. Declarer can see that the only chance to get back into his hand is with a spade. He can probably squeeze the hand with the ace and king af spades. On that he will I discard two clubs-the ace of clubs then would became a bothersome card, so the declarer leads the ace of clubs from dummy at once, de- liberately setting up West's king.
The eight of spades is returned from dummy, West discards the nine af hearts, declarer overtakes with the jack of spades and leads the king of spades. East follows, dummy discards the five of clubs and West the jack of clubs. The her of spades is led by declarer,
of donmy discarding the seven clubs and West is squeezed by the play known as the Vienna coup. If he discards the king of clubs, declarer's queen will be good, while if a diamond is discarded
