LOCAL INDUSTRY'S

PLEA

We have heard various excuses made for the Italian preparations for war on the border of Ethiopia. The honesty of the desire to re- move the threat to peace which continued border incidents have kept alive cannot be doubled, nor

the

Government's Italian humane wish to abolish the slave traffic which still flourishes in Beems thit Abyssinia. But It these reasons are rather secondary. The fact is that Italy is ambitious. Sho is anxious to establish for her- self a greater colonial empire. In protectorate She wants Abyssinia. Signor Mussolini is n great leader, a man of vision and high courage. He is, above all things, direct. He does not at- tempt to disguise his country's aims. Heretofore there may have been good cause for procrastina- Tion; but now he is prepared to speak up and tell the world pre- cisely what Italy intends to do in North-East Africa. That, at least, is the sense of despatches from London and Rome. Italy, appre- hensive of the renwakening of German colonial ambition, is going to steal a march on the Nazi armies and establish herself more securely in Africa. She will be satisfied with nothing less than a protec- torate in Abyssinin and for this she is prepared to fight. Italy has refused to compromise. The British offer to secure important concessions from Addis Ababa to buy off the Italian threat, has fail- el. Mr. Eden's quid pro quo did not weigh enough to satisfy these Romans, and the legions will in- vade the desert. Such seems to be the situation.
