This Bank gave against payment by weight, that the trade dollar being heavier than the Mexican dollar, payment by weight would result in more dollars being paid by weight than the number of dollars paid by count under the present currency system, which would be thought unnecessary.
The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank would make the Trade Dollar legal tender. The Bank wanted to advocate the introduction of it, as a clean counted Coin, not one that needed to be weighed, only 990 dollars out of 1000 being of full weight.
It added, "It is absurd to require them to weigh them, the result being that they are counted, not weighed, but unfortunately though practically of the same purity as the present currency, there is still an argument against it."
The National Bank of India stated that it would choose the American Trade Dollar, if any addition were made to the present currency, because it is about one per cent heavier than the standard, and a dual standard of this nature would inevitably lead to endless complications in business.
