HEAT AFFECTS ATTENDANCE

(By "Sagax")

UNDER a sweltering heat, re-

lieved only by the gradual setting of the sun, the Hongkong football season was brought to a close yesterday afternoon when the Army won the Kotewall Charity Cup by beating the Royal Navy by five goals to two.

ON the previous day, the league

terminated with Champions v. Rest matches on the Hongkong Football Club Ground, when both the Benler and Junior winners of the league were success- ful against representativo - sides.

WHEN the fan, Mr. R. H. Kotewall. W one of the Vice-Presidents of the Hongkong Football Association, walk- ed into the emply enclosure Cause- way ay yesterday afternoon and belield his handsome truphy standing majestically on a table in front of Le covered stand, he must have felt greatly disappointed to think that such a valuable eup presented by king should have attracted unch a small crowd of spectators.

VEN to describe the attendance as "small crowd" is to exaggerate the number of people present for it was an extremely poor siteulance and one that was worthy only' of a second division league match.

A sprinkling of white jackets only

Just made itself discernable in the spacious stands but where was the Army? Was it out on. man- onuvres or was it just a case of "couldn't be bothered?"

W

THE Council of the flangkong Foot- ball Association must have felt somewhat ashamed of its organising abilities when a match in which the best talent in the Army and the Roya! Navy can only draw a crowd extimat- ed at approximately 400.

LITTLE doubt can remain that the bent has had a lot to do with the final attendances at the récent xharity matches and It was a pity that they had been left to a late in the season. There is, of course, too much football crammed into six months in Hongkong but that is an other question and one which might well be taken up by the organisers next season,

South China's League Champion team. Reading according to their field positions the players are:-Wong Wing: Li Tin-ang and Lau Mau Leung In-chan, Leung Wing-chiu and Lee Kwok-wal; Tio Kwal-shing, Chan Takifai, Fung King.cheung, Tam Kong-pak and

Minus the services of such stalwarts

as A. V. Gosano, B. Cosano, A. S. Bliss, G. Rodger and A. Ward, the Rest of the League suffered defeat at the hands of the Champions, South China "A", by the odd goal in three on the Club ground on Saturday afternoon. In spite of the extreme heat there was a moderate crowd of spectators in the stands, and the hillside "grand stand". The game was keenly contested throughout, both goals undergoing very narrow escapes.

The charity football match between the Army and match on the Hongkong Football the Royal Navy in the Kotewall Cup Competition at Causeway Bay yesterday afternoon brought the local soccer season to an official close for another six months. The Army who had already beaten South China, the only competitors in this newly organised competition, won from the Navy by five goals to two and at the conclusion of the match Ridley received the Cup from Mrs. Kote- wall while members of the winning team were handed small cups as souvenirs,

Prior to the commencement of the match the teams were presented, t Commodore C. G. Sedgwick.

The heavy rain of the early after noun, brief though it was, was auf- ficient to make the ground slippery | and prevent the players from giving, of their best, with the result that the standard was not as high as it would otherwise have been.

Selence, partlealarly during the early stages of the game, gave way to robust football and many promising inovencita were nullified by the con- their ditions. The players had all work cut out to keep a pass away! from an opponent, the wet state of the ground making ball control A dir- flealty.

During the opening half the Army, forwards were not the dangerous fores that they subsequently proved to be and they were somewhat fortunate to have scored the only goal of the half.
