CRAZIEST FOOTBALL PROPOSAL EVER MADE
IDEA WOULD RUIN THE CUP TOURNAMENT
PUBLIC INTERESTS DISREGARDED
(By Frank M. Carruthers.)
Of all the ideas which have obvious reply of the Football Associa the way in which the Cup competi been put forward to improve tion would be: "If you do not liko football, I can recall none 80tion is run keep out of it". It would crazy na that the Cup-ties should be justified..
Underlying the iden le plainly the be played in mid-week,

How long would it ratain od in to support it, but since they its popularity with the ties relegated have had time to reflect they must surely have appreciated the audacity to mid-week later?

The Cup competition in a national would descend to the level which all event run by the Football Associa-week competitions have occupied. tion. They are its guardians and they have always conducted it for the benefit of the game. If they ever had any proprietorial rights over it they no longer obtain.
The Cup compotition is like the game: it belongs to the public,
Fortunately there is no danger of the authorities allowing it to be exploited, except in the national in- terests.
They have grown up with the game and become white-haired in its ser- vice. They may even be weary of the work and ready to listen to those who, because they know nothing of what has been accomplished, suggest that they should make way for
younger men.
MISTAKEN IDEA
At tho best, it is a wretched den forward without consideration of public Intereata.
Apparently its sponsors are ready! to throw over those who fill their grounds on a Saturday, in the belief that they could attract another mid- week public.
I believe this to be entirely at
ocensiona! mid-week taken. The match may make a big appeal, but what would be the position if the 32 ties comprising the third round were drebled on goiera! working days?
The slump which would follow would quickly convince everyone that a dreadful blander had been made in altering the conditions.
When such ridiculous and mis- chlovous proposals no that the Cup competitim, the greatest event of the year, should be subordinate to the League and the presumed financial Interests of the cluls, it is

I feel that the strongest protest is called for, not so much against the proposal, which will not bear the st perfunctory examination, but against the motive which inspired it.]

the John McKennas, who have the sanity to maintain a proper perapee-|
tive and by their common sense views maintain the principles on which the game has been built.
OBVIOUS REPLY
When Mr. McKenna was informed of the proposal to play the Cup-lien In mid-week I can pleture him shak- ing his stick and asking, "Have they lost their senses?" Then with hi eyes twinkling he would laugh hearth ly at the absurdity of it.
This, of course, is how the proposal should be regarded.
Besides, is no thought be given to the industrial state of the country. the supporter's, and the depth of pocket?
COMMERCIALISM ~Commercialism has eaten for yn- ough into the game alrendy. It has in fact renched a dangerous point.
I know that I shall be told that I should take a different view if I were responsible for a club's finances.
But it in Indiaputable that the public are now contributing a greater. revenue to the game than ever be-i fore, and I would suggest to the clubs that they are doing a disservice to the game by strahying to get more.
I cannot imagine it ever being seribusly put forward. If it la, the out of it.
The wrestlers used to do the wrestling in mat conteals, but the modern leap and lunge technique has shifted the burden to the re- farce. At top, the official tugs and pulle to get Joe Dusek back in the ring in a match with Ivan Vernyhorn in New York. Below, tha refarne is thrown for a less when tangles with ex-champion Jin
