After completing thirty-two years of continuous service with Messrs. Butterfield & Swire, Mr. N. S. Brown, retired director, left Shanghai for England yesterday (Tuesday) in the P. & 0. liner In Cathay. Mr. Brown arrived China in January, 1902, and has held various important posta in Agent nt the firm, having been Hankow for seven years and later Manager at Hongkong and Shang- hai,
Mr. During his long, career Brown has given generously of his time to public and community servico, in Shanghal, Hankow, and Hongkong. In 1930 he was elected to the Shanghai Municipal Council and served as Chairman of the Watch Committee and on the membership of the Finance, Trame, and Public Utilities Com- mitless. He was re-elected in 1931 and served as Chairman of the Watch Comitee and on the membership of the Finance, Public Utilities, and Traffic Committees. He realgned in November, 1931, to go on Home leave.

Mr. Brown wis a member of the Committee of the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce in 1921 and 1922; he was chairman of the sub- committee formed for the purpose of Investigating the pilotage ques- tion in Shanghai. He was also member of the Board of Trustees for the Administration of the In: demnity Funds (British), from April, 1931, to date, and of the Joint, Committee of the British Chamber of Commerce and the China Association, 1929-31 and 1982 to date,
