King Alfonso has always been most kind to me. It would be difficult to say how many times I have waited on him.
I like to remember that he has toasted me overy time, although only one evening with the King stands out in my memory. This was when His Majesty and a cer- tain British peer were dining to gether, and the conversation turn- ed to horse-racing. The ex-King proved himself to be an expert in this matter, and talked continuous- ly about the horses he fancied for coming races. I myself am not averse to a flutter now and then, and in the end I plucked up sufficient courage to ask the King which horse ho thought would win the Derby,
"I would any Manna," was the reply. This rather astounded me. for the betting was 9 to I against the animal, but I acted on King's advice. And, as everybody knows, Manua romped home,
