Ambitious Gaumont-British Clips As Decoration

An ambitious 1935 production programme has been announced by Michael Balcon, Director of Pro- duction for Gaumont-British.

George Arliss will start Accond- G.-D. film in the apring. This is to be an original story by J. B. Priestley, while Arlies's third G.-B. picture may be "Pepys" or an alternative subject.

The first pietura, actually start production in 1935. will be "Thirty-Nine Stops," directed by Alfred Hitchcock, his boing a screen version of John Buchun's spy drama.
Next on the list is. "Redemp. tion," a film transcript of Tolstoi's novel, "The Living Corpse," which will reunite Madeleine Carroll and Conrad Voidt, whose inst co- atarring appearance was in "I Was a Spy." "Redemption" in to directed by Berthold Viertel direc. tor of "Little Friend."

In May, Conrad Veldt will make a further picture, working under Walter Forde. This picture is "King of the Damned.”
Walter Forde will also be roa ponsible for the direction of "Soldiers Three," based on the adventures of the famous Kipling Aoldier-characters. Work on this aubject will be started shortly in India, where exterior scenes are to be shot. Viertel will also direc: "The Passing of the Third Floor Back," starting late in July,

The stake of American Inves- tors abroad at the beginning of 1035 approximated $16,250,000,000 or $465,000,000 less than a year ago and approximately $1,750,- 000,000 below the all-time penk established at the end of 1931, according to the annual estimates by Mr. Winkler, President of the American Council of Foreign Bondholders, Inc.
