COURT OFFICIALS STAND BY TILL MIDNIGHT

Flemington, Feb. 13.

AVOIDING OFFENCE

Washington, Feb. 18.

In the eyes of an American Congressman,

.the. civilian Japanese population in Call- fornin and the Japanese fishing flect in Los Angeles harbour constitute a potential offensive force in the event of America becoming involved in a dispute with Japan.

References to Japan before the Military Committee of the House of Representatives, hearing evidence in connection with the catablishment of strategic air bases in Alaska, léd the Chairman, Representative McSwain, to order the remainder of the sitting held in camera to- day.

Hauptmann, charged with the murder of the Lind-proposed bergh baby, is lying in his cell below the room in which the men and women of the jury are deliberating upon his fate. His life is in their hands, but he is calm and apparenntly unconcerned.

1

Mr. Edward Reilly, chief counsel for the defence, is waiting in the courthouse, but the prosecutor, Mr. David Willentz, Attorney General of the State, has left. The crowd remains in the street outside and the. public seats of the court are still all occupied-Reuter.

- Judge Trenchard's chargo to the Hauptmann trial fury was a strik ing contrast to the rhetorical addreases of the prosecution and defence.

In scholarly and measured tonos be concisely set forth the main facts of both sides. He laid a Anger on the weak links of the defence, particularly in regard to the attack on Dr. Condon's evid-j enco and Hauptmann's explanation of his possession of the ranson notes.

Evenly weighed though it was, the Judge's charge, In the opinion of most, was heavily loaded against Hauptmann.

When the jury left the box and the court slowly emptied, a huge crowd gathered outside the court- house to bear the decision. Hour
