John Rau, one of the most bril-Hamburg Bant of the younger exports, made ankow a splendid showing in this year's Harbin tournament. Rau and his partner, Charles Lochridge, made their four heart contract on this hand with- out difficulty, losing only two apade to be shinined on application tricks and one club trick.
East can hardly be blamed for his double, considering his partner'a bidding, and West was well satisfied until the freak distribution of South's hand became apparent.
When the other two members of Rau's team, Fred. D. Kaplan of New York and Samuel Katz of Newark, N. J., played the East-West hands, they went to five diamonds over South's four heart bid and North doubled.
