HUNTING FOR STOLEN CAR

INNOCENT DRIVER

Tho hearing was concluded at York County Court recently of the caso in which Joseph Southerton, manufacturers' agent, of Billot [Road, Walthamstow, claimed £100 damages for infuries to himself

and his motor-car, when a police constable on the look-out for two stolen motor cars aw

swung a storm lamp through the windscreen and Southerton's face was cut by the glass.

The action was against Polico constable Pickup, of the York Police. He was on the Dringhouses rond, stonding between red hurri- cant lampa, Intercepting traffic in each direction, Southerton admit- ted seoing the lamps and a figure which he said he thought was that of a night watchman. He assumed that road repairs were in progress and was going to pass on his right when he found he could get through on the left and swerved back. A lamp was then lifted violently from the ground and came through his windscreen.

Police constable Pickup said that red lampa were the customary police night signal at York. Ho had stopped something like 20 cars previously that night by waving a lump at them. He did the same in this case, and as the car, swerved and came straight at him, so that
