Purvia, Mississippi. Jan. 18. The only man legally hanged in Mississippi who lived to tell, the story has decided to go on a tour! and describe how he almost paid] the supremo penalty for a murder he did not commit.
Only the real old timers remem- ber the case of Will Purvis, who was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death at Columbla 40 years ago, It was a dark night. In the early part of 1894 that the victim, said to have been man who testled before the Marion County Grand Jury regarding the activities of an organisation known as the "White i Cups", was ambushed and shot his wagon as he rode through from n wooded section north of Columbia. Bloodhounds were put on the trail, which led to the East bank of Pearl River, where someone ap- parently had entered a boat. The officers on the hunt took the hounds. ncross the stream and picked up a trail near the East side bont land- ing.
The hounds went straight to the| Purvia home. Mr. Purvis was Ar- rested and spirited away, as feeling run high against him.
Indictment, trial, and conviction followed. Mr. Purvis protested his Innocence and offered an alibi prov- Ing that he was not in the vicinity of the crime.
