The list of New Year Honours is headed by the names of five new Peers, whilst one new Privy Coun cillor has been appointed. There are also five, new Baronetcies, 27 new Knights in the Prime Minister's list and 29 other new Knighthoods.

The Knighthoods in the Premier's list are conferred for services in widely different fields, the recipients including three M.P.'s and others prominent in public affairs. Many appointments and promotions in various Orders of Chivalry are also announced.

Simultaneously with the issuing of the Honours List the Admiralty announces that H.R.H. the Prince of Wales has been promoted to be Admiral-in-Fleet; whilst the Prince's promotion in the Army to the rank of General and in the Air Force to that of Air Chief Marshal is also gazetted.
