Men Who Love

Their Dogs

FRIENDS OF THE FAMOUS

"The misery of keeping a dog fa his dying so zoon; but to be sure, If he lived for 50 years, and then dled, what would become of me?"

So wrote Sir Walter Scott, who Iwas devoled to his dogs, and who found them in the hour of disaster his faithful friends...

Mrs. Browning's dog, Flush, has figured in modern drama, as en- thusiasts for "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" remember so well, Her spaniel figured in one of the most discussed "curtains" of mod- era dramo.

The outraged Barrett, on hear- Ing of his daughters elopement with Robert Browning, orders tho destruction of the dog. His expre- sive dismay on learning that Eliza-

with

her beth has taken Flush brings the play to a memorable conclusion.

And this is a true picture of actual lite. The poctiss was great-

ly attached to Flush. And she Im- mortaliaed him in verse.

"Like a lady's ringlets brown, Flow thy slikon ears adown

Elther side demurely,

Of thy liver-suited breast, Shining out from all the rest

Of thy body purely."

The dog was the gift of a friend, and the famous pet outlived its mistress. Mrs. Browning refers to Flush often in her writings, cali- ing him among other things, "Lov ing fellow-creature."

It would seem that Robert Brown. ing, her husband, did not share his wife's enthusiasm for doge. In his poem, Tray, he tells the story of a dog who rescued buy from drowning. But he concludes dia- appointingly:

"By vivisection and expense Of half an hour and eighteen

pence,

How brain secretes dog's soul

we'll see."

But of course, Browning may here be indulging in a tilt at tha vivisectioniste.

DUMAS PERE'S ZOO

Alexandre Dumas, the elder, was

a great lover of animals. He wrote a book about his pets. In the study be kept a vulture, three monkeys, macaw, a cat, and a golden phea- sant. But his dog took precedience. He never wrote without the faithful friend curled up at his feet. And sometimes he would read a passage aloud and remark, ""There, doggie, what do you think of that?"

Outside literature, many famous men have made history with their dogs. Cecil Rhudes, the traveller and explorer; Nansen, the Arctic wanderer: Benjamin Franklin, the famous American, have all left on

to record their devotion man's faithful friend.

But one of the most extraordinary: dog stories on record concerns a missionary. He was Robert Free- man, who worked in South Africa, where his love for dogs was well known.

When one day he asked a Boer farmer to grant permission for a service in the farm kitchen that the coloured sorvants might attend, the farmer, knowing the missionary's interest in dogs, sald contemptuous-. ly. "If you must preach, hold

service for the dogs."

Freeman took him at his word. He had the farra dogs paraded, and selecting an appropriate text, he preached them a sermon. The text was, "Even the dogs may eat of the crumbs that fall from the children's table."

This 50 impressed the farmer that he at once granted permission for the servants to come in for a service.

CANINE SCREEN "STAR"

It is dificult to avoid sentiment when writing of dogs and dog- lovers, for all the world loves a dog. And if the following lines supuest 'n foolish sentimentality, they at least illustrate the place of a dog not only in the hearts of the great and famous, but in the lives of the great public.

They are written on the tomb- atone of one of the greatest film stars who ever nëpentod on the Hereen-Rin Tin Tin. This dog in his day was loved by milions of people in five continents.

"To God's great studion another

star,

Has gone his way, magnificent-

ly wlac

And now in folds where angel

children are,

He plays to the applause of

Paradise."

Cheap perhaps. But not for those who love a dog.
