SCHOOL PRIZE. DAY TRIBUTE PAID TO WORK OF MI. A. R. SUTHERLAND

of Mr.A. K. Appreciation Sutherland's services to the Indian school and community. were expressed by Mr. A. T. Hamilton. Headmaster of the Ellis Kadoorie Indian School, and Mr. A. el Arculli, who presided at.

of the the annual prize-distribution school on Saturday morning,

Bir. Hamilton mentioned Mr. Suther- land's impending retirement and both speakers expressed best wishes to Mr. and Mr. Sutherland in their well- earned retirement.

A must satisfactory report of the year's work was read by Mr. Hamilton, and Mr. Arcaili expressed congratula tions to Mr. Hamilton and the staff un the excellent results.

The following are extracts from the report:

At thu Annual Examination 140 boys were examined and 116 passed. Urdu is and always has been a very weak subject particularly with local born boys. The language usually spoken by these boys is Chinese and they are consequently at a great din

advantage. To try and overcome this difficult the Urdu syllabus has been considerably modified, new text books introduced and the time-table altered whereby more time is devoted to this subject in every class. I feel sure that by next year I shall be able to report an improvement.

Need For Extension

Mention has been made in previous reports about the pressing need, for extension. I wish to emphasise this again. Year by year. our numbers are increasing and our enrolment of 175 this year is the highest in the history. of the school. We are fortunate In having a well covered playground and spacious grounds which are utilized to the best advantage when weather conditions are favourable but during the cold and wet weather our accom- modation is severely taxe.

With the introduction of Kinder- garien our numbers increased, necessi. taling vertain changes in pronilaes and equipment.

Thirty boys enjoy the privilege of free tuition and on their behalf I wish to express gratitude to the doners--- Mr. A. el Areulli and the Trustees of the Ellis Kaduurie Fund. In addition we have boys holding Government Scholarships. Our thanks are also die tu the late Mr. Wu Ilay-tonk for a scholarship tenable at Queen's College for 3 years.

In conclusion I wish to thank most sincerely all the members of the staf for their loyal support and co-opern. tion during the year which enabled the work of the school to be carried on so harmoniously,
