Owing to the magnitude of the work, I thought it necessary to insert this amount in the Estimate of 1876, and in doing so, I should perhaps explain that despite the reduction to $6000 made last year, and the $10,000 suggested by me for this year's estimates, the improvement in cleaning and re-arranging has not been so great as I could have desired.
8. Government Store - $2500.
This item provides for the cost of erecting a small godown which is urgently needed by this Department; wherein to house the yearly 442 consignments of Stores from England, as also the material (new and old) in use, and which at present has to be stacked in the open air for want of room.
The proposed godown would be built against the back of the present Government Store Room.
10. Land Surveys - $2000.
This detail provides for the cost of obtaining professional assistance, labor, granite land works, stationery, etc., in connection with the Land Surveys of the Island of Hong Kong, as follows:
