NOTES OF THE DAY
THRIVING BUSINESS
Everyone knows that thousanda of dollars, baga and boxes full of Chinese silver, are being smuggled out of China daily, According to a most reliable source this Chinese silver money is pouring into Hongkong in a steady stream, at the rate of approximate- ly $1,000,000 a day. The theory is that it is re-exported, either to England or America. The reaso for this fight of Chinese silver is obvious. The value of the metal In the dollar is greater than the value of the dollar itself, due to the fact that China has succeeded In preventing an advanco in the value of her currency in propor tion to the price rise of the metal. China placed an embargo on silver exports.. Hence the nelivity of certain "merchants" who amuggle coins out of Chinese seaports. As long as this price discrepancy re- maine, no long will the drain on China's silver resources continue.
And unless something is done to check the smuggling the situation will become increasingly cm- barrassing. It may even be dun- kerous. The supply of Chinese silver is not inexhaustible
