of the recent posting of the Superannuation Act of 1875, followed shortly afterwards by the promulgation of a "Treasury Minute" dated April 9
the 1875 which has marked still more strongly the distinction between the sister Services in China.

The Act referred to empowers the Lords of the Treasury to declare any place or Countre or place and be an unhealthy place.
Whereupon persons who have served in an established capacity in the permanent Civil Service in any such place, are for the purposes of Superannuation allowance, entitled to reckon not for three years.

And by the Minute above mentioned their Lordships have declared all the Consular Ports in China and all the other towns or Cities in China, where there are persons employed in the permanent Civil Service, to be unhealthy places within the meaning of the Act.

Hong Kong has, we are informed, already been reckoned among unhealthy Colonies by the Lords of the Treasury, and it is in fact notoriously more unhealthy than Swatow, Amoy, Chefoo, (the sanitarium of China) and other ports and Cities in China now declared unhealthy, but which are free from the protracted and enervating summer, which so severely tries the constitution of Europeans in this Colony.
