rise in silver on the London Market is partially reflected in the Hongkong dollar quotation this morning, which rose a halfpenny to Is. 8d. This is the highest rate quoted for the past five years.
Silver rust-in-London to 20%. for the spot quotation, an advance of no less than 1.1/8d., whilst the forward quotation rose 1.8/10d. io 24.5/8d. The advance was due to and large speculative buying. short supplies. China sold at the advance, and the market closed uncertain.
There were no signs of Ameri- can buying on the London mar- kot yesterday, and it is presurned that speculators bought in order to forestall official American pur- chases, as there was no news to cause the rush of buying. China and India speculators were espo cially prominent.
