Swan, Culbort- son and Fritz: The Wall Street Journ nl report on yesterday's markets: Stocks firmed up, due to the improve. ment in steel production, but at the close most Issues were receding from the day's high lovela, owing to the generally pessimilatic atmosphere, Bonds were irregularly higher, fen- tured by the Armnéas of United States Government Issues. Stacks on the Curb Exchange were upward. Wheat prices were downward, due to reporta: of favourable weather con ditions in the Argentine..

S. C. & F. New York office cables: The stock market developed a derately fr tani, na the Security Exchange Coitimission announces 'conservative regulation programme. There is no outstanding news, Auto- hobile production totalled 42,900 cars and trucks during the week ended September 18th. Basiness fallures for the week ended September 13th totalled 109, against 174 last week and 275 failures during the corres ponding period of last year, $30,000. New York and Chicago commodity reports received through Messrn. Swan, Culbertson & Fritz:-
Cotton: Favourable crop and wen- 'ther reports, poor exports, a Black domestic ofinke and political and Anancial uncertainty are preventing outside participation, which is neces sary for any sustained advance. There is continued agitation for the repeal of the Bankhead Act.
Grain: Fears of imports of wheat, copious rains in the South-west and general apathy on the part of Traders caused a narrow market. The tone was steady to-day and the cash posi tion remained strong.
Rubber: The market. is dull and featureless.
Sugar: The market
ruled quiet,
but barely steady, dwaiting develop. ments.
