WEAK STERLING
NEW RECORD HIGH FOR
GOLD
London, Aug. 31. The price of gold has soared to reach a new high record of 1408. 111⁄2d., speculative profit taking being responsible for an increase in turn-over to £775,000, with corresponding decrease in the pre- miums to fourpence over the frone, at 74.68, and two shillinge to the dollar at $4.99.%

Continental apprehenelons over sterling are not shared by respon- siblo British Prens writers.
The Financial Times states that is Continental speculation, which mainly responsible for the weak- ness, goes merrlly on, and adds that the Exchange Fund has not been

"Bears" are now all that
the funds in its coffers are empty, which the paper thinks is nonsence, saying that if the Fund does not 80 in operate at present it does order to hit with greater effect when it is thought the appropriate. moment has arrived.
Not at Foreign Mercy. The fate of sterling does not hang at the mercy
of foreign speculators and the situation is viewed here with completa calm- ness, as evidenced by the stendiness of gilt edged securllies.
The weakness of sterling, the Financial Times thinks, is a weak- ness which is likely to be of some duration, as the normal seasonable pressure against sterling is only bo ginning; but the paper believes that the pressure is likely to be lightened, na foreign. balances in London are now negligible.
However, the paper is of the opinion that the control funds have been seriously strained, by these withdrawals, estimating the amount of gold sold by the Fund to the Bank of France since March to be alightly over £15,000,000.
All papers point out the "bear" position of sterling has now reach. ed substantial proportions, owing to heavy selling from Paris
and New York.
The Financial Times pointa out that the French Autumn budgetary politient difleulties may easily re- Ault in the return of French balances to London later in the year, thus bringing about the re- covery of sterling--Reuter.
