STRATOSPHERE

ADVENTURE

Aeronaut's Story Of Amazing Escape

PARACHUTE JUMPS

The United States attempt on the stratosphere height record, which began from Rapid City. South Dakota, nearly ended in dianster for the balloon's occup- ante.

.

When over North Platte, Nebras ko, at a height of over 60,000 feet, the underside of the envelope ripped, and the balloon began slow ly to descend.

was

When the balloon

low enough for the attempt to be made one of the three men. inelde, Mr. Orvil Anderson, the second pilot. Jumped from 5,000 feet.

He was followed by Captain Albert W. Stevens, the observer, at the last moment, with the balloon, at 600 feet, Major Kempaèr, the pilot, leapt clear.

Immediately nfterwards the great gas-bag burst and was sech to drop like a stone on to a farm near Lexington.

The expedition had been design- ed to break all previous stratos phere recorda.

The fantastic-looking craft had climbed to an altitude of 11 miles when its gas-bag was suddenly ripped open. The three airmen. looking through the glass roof of the circular metal gondola in which they were sealed, saw to their dis- may the gash widen,

As the cold air of the stratos, phere rushed into the gap, the balloon shuddered and swayed like a foundoring ship.

BROADCAST DRAMA.

Within a few seconds the balloon began to plunge to earth. Its Gecupants were being whirled downwards under three acres of flapping fabric.

Wireless listeners all over Anter-} ica who had been following the broadcast of the ascent by Kemp- ner gasped with horror when they realised that disaster had taken this great craft.

over-

Speaking in cool, level tones, Kempner said, "The bottom of the balloon is pretty well torn out. The thing is beginning to look like a huge sieve. I don't know how long she is going to hold | together,"

"How fast are you falling?" Inquired tho War Department of Washington,

"About as fast as a man would fall if he jumped off a roof," call-j ed back Kempner..

At 30,000 feet the balloonista opened the port-holes of the gon- dola. Then at 13,000-feet listen- ers heard Stevens in a tense volca saying: "We are getting ready to jump.'

At this point wireless contact with the balloon was severed, and listeners were loft guessing at the outcome of this drama of the sky.

Nothing is well established, ac- cording to 'n Chinese, until after the first thousand years. The only trouble with that theory is that no- body ever lives to prove it.

I think I met hundreds, of Chinese and Japaneso who speak English. I know a few Americans who speak the Oriental languages but not many. I'm not recommend |ing that every American chiki be taught to speak Chinese, but it might not be a bad idea for a few of them to learn the world's oldest ¦ language.
