REPROOF FROM CHIEF JUSTICE AT SESSIONS Criticism of Magisterial routine was made by the Chief, Mr. A. D. A. MucGregor, during an impasse in yesterday's murder trial at the Criminal Scasions.
The accused was Cheung Chak, of about 35 years of age, and ho pleaded not guilty of the murder of Wong Szo-mui, a female, of 1 Wo ong Chuk Street, by causing har to fall from the second floor verandah at that address on Juna
Mr. J. A. Fraser, Assistant At- torney General, represented the Crown, and Mr. D. McNeill, Instructed by Mr. W. Keith Robin- Bon, of Messrs. Te'o & Hodgson appeared for the defence.:
During the
cross-examination'
of Lot Tong-kong who said he Identified Wong So as chasing the accused, Mr. McNeill elicited from bim the remark that he had Idon- tinted the woman at the Magis tracy "because he had read it was her in the newspapers."
Mr. McNell said witness had given his evidence before this ap peared in the newspapers.

Whon the depositions looked up it was discovered that the original noto was "I recognise the 'woman," and the typescript copy rand "I recognised the wo-
man."
His Lordship: I hope stops will be taken to draw the attention of the Magistrates to the very grave necessity of exercising scrupulous and personal care in this matter. I am not accustomed, I may say, elsewhere, to find the cortifying of depositions done by anybody but a Magistrate, under his own hand. I hope, in future, this will be done, and that this Court cat rely on the certified depositions im- plicitly. This discrepancy might have done irremediable harm to the accused person. In this case it has put the three of us in a quandary.
Mr. Fraser: I am afraid I re- lled on that in my opening.....
His Lordship: In that case you stand acquitted. (Laughter).
The Crown has not yet closed its caso, the evidence and cross- examination being very protract-
ed.
