SOLDER'S DEATH EVENING FROCK

MYSTERY

Coroner On "Conspiracy of Silence"

AN OPEN VERDICT

Saying that the police were up against a blank wall and that there seemed to have been a conspiracy of allence in regard to the cir cumstances that brought about a man's death, Mr. Ingleby Oddie, at Westminster, recorded an орон verdict respecting Private Arthur Pass, R.A.M.C., aged 28, who died In Millbank Military Hospital from hemorrhags and fractured skull after, it was alleged, he had been struck in the street in Bayswater on Sunday, June 8.

The inquest had been adjourned to enable the police to investigate a statement which Private Pans made three days before he died. In this deceased sald, "I was out aide the Artesian Inn in Richmond Road about 10.6. p.m. on Sunday, June 3. While I stood talking to some of my friends I was apparent- ly set on by some people why, I don't know--and I don't remember who hit me. All I remember is that I woke up several hours later in the hospital."

John Joseph O'Brien, a private in the R.A.M.C., said to-day that ho and Pass left their barracks at Millbank on Sunday evening, June 3. and took a bus near Oxford Street and made a call later at the Artesian Inn in Bayawater, where they were joined by another private of the R.AM.C., Tomlinson. They stayed there half an hour or so. where they saw two other people whom they knew. All the drinks deceased had woro, two pints and one glass or beer.

OTHER MAN'S FAMILY

SECOND "HUSBAND" MUST PAY

How a man had umnowingly contracted a bigamous marriage and and boon found liable to malu- tain four children, was told at Kirkcaldy Polico Court, when Daniel Nicol, 220 St. Clair Street. Kirkcaldy, sought to have a main tenance order which had been granted against him revoked.

Mr. James Thomson, solicitor, Kirkcaldy, who appeared on Nicol's. behalf, said that on the petition of an official of the Royal Society for the Prevention of. Cruelty to Children, the four children had been committed to an approved school, and Nicol had been ordered

to pay 28. per week in respect of each

ch to the Scottiah Education Department.

It had been discovered sub- sequently that the father of the childron was alive and had been living for a time in a font at Ladybank. The mother of the children had now died but, at the time of his marriage, Nicol had bcon under the Impression that the father was dead. - Inquiry. made at Ladybank, however, showed that the father had now gone from thero.

Mr. Thomson said he was found- ing upon the Children and Young Persons Act, which stated that a order might be re- vokeributory

or varled by a Court of sum- mary jurisdiction. Ho submitted that with the death of the mother tho circumstances had materially altored and it seemed hard that Nicol should have to continue con- tributing to the upkeep of these children, who were not his own and

whose father was alive.
