LEAGUE DISCUSSION OF . MAURETTE REPORT

Geneva, July 18... The League of Nations Intellec tual Co-operation Committee to-day discussed the Maurette Report.

In it 31, Ferdinand Maurette, the French economlat, discusses his recent mission to Chinn in fullest detall and pays tributo breadth and profuuidty

to "ibe of the views" of Mr. Wang Shih-chleh In the work of reforming and in- proving the Chinese education system.

According to Mesars. Swan Cul- bertson und Fritz, the New York market was dull yesterday. The 15ml Street Journal reports: The market went upward talay, owing to optimulam being felt regard ing in early settlement of the Coast strike, together with a slight vance in Steel production.

Mining istes particularly were strong fed by United States Smelting. Trading however, was very dull. Curb stocks were upward, while Bonds were irregularly higher, due to the strongering the tremendous inerense In Stocks and Commodity markets. After an early rise, due to reports of Canadian crop damage, profit tak. be caused the Wheat Markel to take a downward turn.

Messrs. Swan,, Culbertson and Fritz's New York offee cable report: The market continued to Improve on more favourable news regarding the San Francisco strike. Electricity production for the week amounted to 1,0-18,000,000 kilo-watt huure, which

gure remains unchanged from the corresponding period of inst year. The net profit of the General Electric Company for the first nix months of this year amounted to $7,175,000, equal to twenty-eight Cents

per Common share, as compared with n art profit amounting to 31,866.000, or sixteen Cents per Common share, for the corresponding period of last year. Favourable factors: Lessened in. Runner of the San Francisco strike as market factor, the firmness of commodities, the fact that stocks were well supported on declines and evidence of a continuation of selec tive! buying of desirable joues. Unfavourable factors: Early çar- landing reports indicate <reip below of the corresponding period last year and the existence of several so-called wenk spots which, unless corrected, might occasion a further unsettlement in stocks,

to

Wheat: There were unfavourable Teports of the spring whent crop. in- cluding a private estimate that the Canadian crop had been reduced 40,000,000 bushels since July 1st.

In the North-West the weather is excessively hot and big losses are re- purted In Corn. Canadian news on Wheat is very bullish, while the wenther in the Corn Belt in clear.

Cotton: The Government weekly report says that rains are needed in the West but the report indicates that crop conditions have been ex- nggerated. This, together with pend. ing rains in Texas Caused some hesitation in the advance, but owing Lo more favourable atrike news a good renetiunt in improbable. The Cotton forecast for the East Central Belts is fair. There are scattered showers in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Texas is fair and partly cloudy, except that the weather is unsettic! near the coust. The Gov. ernment weekly 'report 18 not as bullish as was expected,

and

Rubber: The market. Was Arm, with both the Trade and consumers buying.

The Report quotes figures show- adult students since 1928 and aug gests the development of the search

spirit among the best students and higher education.

In the case of secondary educa- tion. the Report stresses the desirability of developing technical education based on the require- ments of New China. It suggests the introduction of small industries to enable the farmers to add to their incomes.

The Report proposes, too, the broadcasting of lectures through- out China and finally anys that it is essential to develop a system of Inspection in schools of all grades. but especially in the primary and secondary institutions.Reuter.
