INQUIRY RUMOUR
DENIED
Rumours that two officers of H.M.S. Berwick have been questioned on suspicion| of being connected with the epidemic of telephone hoax calls which have caused much annoyance in Hong- kong in the last few days, are now definitely denied.
It is however, admitted that one particular bogus enll has been traced to a naval officer, who is not on the complement of H.M.S. Berwick.
The point is stressed that only one of the many hoax calls have been traced to the officer in ques- tion, and there is reason to believe that several persons not connected. with the Navy have indulged in! this peculiar form of practical joke.
The rumour that an inquiry heal
the Berwick been held on officially denied.

San Francisco, July 5. The most desperate street fighting in the history of San Francisco occurred to-day when the conflict arising from the forcible opening of the port flared up into scenes reminiscent of real warfare.
For some considerable time, the situation was completely out of control. The strikers fought for hours, despite the superior equip. ment of the forces ranged against them.
