NEW SYSTEM: IN DUTCH INDIES
NATIVE PROBLEM OVERSTRESSED
The Hague, June 26. It is reliably reported that the "Dutch East Indies Govern- ment is replacing the export duty on native rubber as soon as possible by a system of in- dividual licenceн.
Meanwhile, the latent available information shows that the potential capacity of the native production is considerably lower than was previously estimated.

SirThe only power, so far as I can find, of the Police in the New, Territories to deal with rables 1 contained in the following regula. tion, which is interesting in view of your announcement that 200 dogs were shot in the New Terri torica. presumably by the Police:

It seems hardly likely that the 200 dogs shot were rabid dogs and therefore the remainder preaum- ably were mangy I don't think manginess is a symptom of rables or of epntact with rabies.
The deduction to be drawn from

Paramount's "Four Frightened Peo- ple," it WAH A "happy hunting ground," in more ways than one The picture, with Claudette Colbert, Herbert Marshall, Mary. Boland, William Gargan and Leo Carrillo playing the leading rule, will be Blown at the King's Theatre starting on Thursday. The system buying or renting what the company did not luve, in stock was entirely forgotten, Practically everything that was needed to "prop" the picture was found right at hand, free for the taking, In the various jungle locations they used. At no time were they forced to go neid for anything that Was needed in the Alming of the picture. Only a minute's notice was ever needed when any item was found missing at the Iasi ininute. All that the property department would have to do was to walk a few feet into the jungle and pick it. As far as the purchasing agent of the troupe was concerned, Hawaii was Heaven. The story of "Four Frightened Peonie" is that of four highly bred ladies and gentlemen, who are lost in the dense Jungle and learn that they are really men and women after all.
"Femalo"
Is a strange and unique, not to Kay starting role, that Ruth Chatter ton plays in her latest First National plcture, Female, which opens to- morrow at the Queen's Theatre. It is also quite a different role from any. thing which she has portrayed before, either on the stage or the screen. She ives, in her character role, whaL might be termed a sort of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde existence, being a big business woman by day, nhd a flirt, who even stoops to pick up strangers on the street, at night. She is an niert, ruthless, able and magnetic business woma. As the end of a vast moter car industry inherited from her father she is aggressive and capable of matching wits with the best captains of industry. To her, business and love are as far apart as the poles. She reserves one for the daytime and the other for the night. The character, as drawn in "Female," is depicted as something of a super woman, who because of her wealth and business genius, believes she has the right to override the conventiona of society. The character, played by Miss Chatterton Duvar is made to appear cheap, even though she flirta outrageously with a stranger at a shoutingallery. But she knows htt men, or thinks she does, and this one happens to be one, with auch high idents that he will have none of her. Is this that brings out the really feminine in the character, for woman- | like, when she finds she cannot have, what she desires most, she moves heaven and earth to get .it. She eventually gets her an, but it iss only after her own ideals and her viewpoint of life have changed. In fact, she completely reverses herself, coming to the belief that marriage and n home is woman's allotment. George Brent, Miss Chatterton's hus. band plays the role of the man who changes her attitude toward life. Johnny Mack Brown, Gavh Gordon her and Phillip Reed are among lovers. The settings are invish in the extreme, as befits the home of nwealthy young society-woman-uf cultivated taste. The business set- tings comprise scenes at a vast plant in LON
Angeles, of which Miss Chatterton is head.
