The ROMANTIC RUNAWAY

CHAPTER XXXV

Pablito, returning from town that afternoon, raised his oyes from the dusty, road to see an Eng. glishman who appeared to be won- doring, aimlessly.

"Are you looking for the gym- nalum?" he asked,

"No, I'm waiting for a friend who is doing a bit of sparring. Are you (the Englishman oyed the young man intently) Juanito? I mean Senor Juanito"7

"I'm Juanito," Pablita answered. He liked the appearance of this stranger. He had never even any one quite like him before at the gymnasium. Nevertheless he was rather surprised to hear himself adding. "Would you care to come to

my rooms to wait for your friend? I'd be glad to have you"

"Thank you," Sir Aubrey an-. swered. "You're most kind."

"I live over that shop," Pablito explained with a wave of his hand. Together they crossed the road and went up the long stairway. At the top Sir Aubrey looked about.

"Snug place you have here," he said approvingly.

"A little bare," Pablito answered. "Ah, well, a man's castle. I hear in a hit for boxing?" you go

"A bit," Pablito answered, «mil- ing. Then he asked, "Will you have a drink?"

Sir Aubrey murmured, “Ah, thanks awfully! That would be Hood, you know!"

Pablito rang a small hand bell and i stovenly criada appeared. "What is it?" Pablito usked Sir Aubrey.

"Eh? What?" the 'other ques tioned.

"I mean what'll you have?" Pab- lito translated,

"Oh, I see. A whiskey and soda?" "I'll have one with you," Pablito agreed. "It will be a rare dis- alpation for me. Inke a drink only about once, a year, Havo to go slow to keep in training, you know,"

"Oh, quite!"

Pablito felt suddenly warmed for the first time since he had received Estello's note. The lank, lean Eng- fishman's eyes were fixed on the youth unmovingly. They were frankly, almost pitiably affectionate, eyea, Paulito was conscious of n strange feeling that most people have known at one time or another -a feeling that makes it seem us If, living, we have stepped into an unreal dream,

"Hang It!" he thought. "What's somó over mo?" To the stranger he anid. "Is this your first trip, to Cuba"?

"No. I've been here once before."

"Like it here?"

No. To be frank, I don't like it much. Have you ever been in

: England?"

"No." Pablito nuswered.

"Ah. you must come! You must come!" The criada appeared as Sir Aubrey was speaklig, bring ing glasses, syphon and n squat. brown bottle of a tarnished tray. !

"I think I'd like it," Pablito said us Sir Aubrey's voice dropped away. "Some times it seems to mo that all my life I've been hunting a sort of permanence which is al ways just out of reach.. I haven't had much--to ko on--"

Ho Raw Sir Aubrey's eyes fill and was surprised and embarrassed by the sight.

"You must come whenever you're over there to visit me at my place at Lower Girtings." Sir Aubrey said with a shaken onger- ness. He set his glass on the tray again because the increased tremb- Ing of his hand did not permit him to hold it steadily. This boy Was his son! This is my sleeping room," Pablito said a few minutes later. Sir Aubrey paused at the doorway.

A little later he and Pablito stood at the door of the gymnas- lum to meet the perspiring and anguish-eyed Blings. Seeing Bill- lugs, Pablito smiled for the first Lime since the ache had settled in his heart the night before.

"Your friend doesn't seem too | happy," he said. Sir Aubrey, guf- fawed loudly. . Later...as he and Bings were about to leave Str Aubrey clung to Pablito's hand.

"I hope you'll come again," Pab- ilo said, a trifle ill ́nt case.

Carilio smiled and his mother, seeing the amile, was heartened. "Ah," she said, lifting the baby. "there is much in the world-even for the sorriest of us—to make the lift of the lips."

"Yes," Carlito agreed. "Each of us has his dream!"
