FOOTBALLERS PREPARING FOR THE LAST ROUND UP

FEVERISH END OF SEASON EXCITEMENT

CHELSEA STILL PURSUED BY DEMOTION BOGEY

NORTHERN DIVISION CLASSIC

ON SATURDAY

(By "The Pilgrim")

ARSENAL have shaken off all contenders for the championship of the senior division except Huddersfield, and the temperamental midlanders have dhether chance to make a serious challenge if they win at home—as they 'should do on Saturday,

Neither has much advantage in the last few matches of the season and on that ground it would be reasonable to assume that the Lon- doners will wear, the crown for another year. Both Huddersfield and Arsenal meet some of the weakest clubs in the First Division in their last engagements.

Chelsea are making a bold bid to acquire the 35 points which just saved them from relegation last year. I suppose after all there is as much excitement for the club's supporters in playing with fire at the bottom of the division as there is in playing for higher stakes at the top!

.

Grimsby must be almost uninteresting to watch now as they have their goal well in sight and have no fear of losing it.

The Second Division strikes me as a unanimous set of home wing this week-at least on form. But form hag

gone way of most things though we still cling to it in the absence of a spectator's view of the club's per- formances.

1st Batt. Welsh Guards, winners of the Army Rugby Cup, won the Prince of Wales Cup-the champ- lonship of the Household Brigade

The Welshmen were the sounder | scrummagers, though the Cavalry- men had three very good men in Harrison. Spink

and Hawker when the ball was out.

The Welsh centres, Brown and] DRAW:- Chugg, were good, and Dowse, their fly-half, played particularly well, but Brown had to go off the field half-way through the second AWAY: half with an injured leg, and the winners had so much in hand that

Preston, Brentford, and Bolton are all in the running for he was not seriously missed. First Division status.

I picked out Brentford a long time age for this honour and from a study of the matches they have before them, I am still inclined to favour their chances though they are a point behind Preston

The latter may be expected to lose at least one point to -Southampton in the last match of the season-if-the-Saints-come-

up to scratch, whilst Bolton may fall at Swansea.

Norwich are assured of promotion and Charlie Buchan will be congratulated on raising the Canaries from their humble nest to the Second Division in his first season as manager.

The Barnsley and Stockport meeting will be causing anxiety in both camps for the club that loses will also lose fifty per cent of its chances of wresting the leadership from Chesterfield, providing that Club wins as it should do at home to Doncaster.

Staines, Chugg and Caldicott scored tries.
