TOKYO, MAR. 22.

HALF THE CITY OF HAKODATE, THE GATEWAY TO HOKKAIDO, HAS BEEN DESTROYED BY A DISASTROUS FIRE WHICH HAS BEEN RAGING SINCE SEVEN O'CLOCK LAST NIGHT AND IS STILL BURNING FURIOUSLY.

The catastrophe is chiefly the work of a seventy- miles-an-hour vernal equinox gale, which caught hold of an outbreak on one side of the port and swept it through the city of closely-packed houses like wildfire.. Half the population is already homeless and it is feared that practically the whole city will be devoured by the flames.

Little is known regarding the fate of the inhabi- tants in the outbreak, but up to the present no report of any loss of life has reached Tokyo, though it seems MANY IN HAND AND difficult to believe that the fire
