PROMOTION PROSPECTS AGAIN IN MELTING POT
HAVE DERBY LOST THEIR CHANCE?
STOCKPORT SETTING NEW "PAGE IN THIRD DIVISION
WEDNESDAY LEAP TO THE FOREFRONT
(By The Pilgrim")
With Wednesday adding their challenge to the formidable bulk of First Division leaders, Queen's Park and Stockport coming up in great form, and the recent upset by Rangers in the Scottish senior section, the promotion prospects so confidently established a couple of matchos ago are again in the melting pot.
Derby. I am afraid, have thrown away their golden opportunity. They are still lying third but if they had taken their opportunities the Rams would be heading the list now,
They have another chance to improve on Saturday when Chelsea will try them out on the Baseball ground. It will be a keen game with the Stamford Bridge Club still fighting gallantly to get out of the relegation rut.
The 'Spurs' late come-back may not be too late but now that Arsenal have gotten into their early season form, they will take some passing.
Huddersfield's top position is very precarious and they will need more than a good goal average to remain there after this week I am afraid.
Wednesday are their next opponents and with so much at stake on both sides I cannot see any other result than a draw.
TO BEAT THE BOOK
HOME —
There is no reason, in my opinion, why Portsmouth and Manchester City should drop their magnificent form because they have the remaining interest in the Cup. With the Final all booked up and some weeks off DRAW they can both abandon themselves to getting a warmer place in the sun at the top of the League.

Birmingham have now slumped to share with AWAY Chelsea the humiliating task of supporting the table. Of course somebody has to be there and Birmingham's arrival is all in the game. The same cannot be said for the Pensioners who have had a consistently bad. spell from the beginning of the season.
I are afraid that Grimsby have now joined the untouchables ---speaking in a sporting sense. They have only to maintain
reasonably good form to gain higher status next season.
Lincoln, after several signs of fair weather, have settled down definitely at the bottom of this Division and Manchester United come next having lost their first fine promise and become the disappointing club they were last season.
OUR FORECAST
(By "The Pilgrim")
The Telegraph
forecast for be Saturday is given below. Where a team is in heavy type it is ex- pected to win, and where no such Indication, is given draw 19 anticipated.
Norwich's unbroken spell of glory must heartbreaking to Queen's Park and Coventry who have themselves done great things for no reward. They are still pegging along six points or so behind and can only wait for the Canaries to falter in their flight for promo- tion to improve themselves.
Cardiff, that great team of yore, retain with painful force the consistency that used to mark their progress upwards even so recently as two seasons ago. But now that consistency is one of defeat after defeat and it will require a superhuman effort to pull them out of the fire.

However it is often that the challengers falter within reach of their goal and it may be that Stockport will find it impossible to keep up the rattling pace they have set in their last six or seven matches.
Rangers have a chance of improving their position and it is up to Motherwell to justify their right to the leadership where they stagnated so long.

Why The Inside Forwards
Must "Graft”
(By "Jaracon"),
The contro half used to be the hardest worked player in a match, but to-day he moves within auch a restricted area in playing his defensivo part that his duties have been greatly lightened. Under present-day conditions the men who do the donkey work are the two inside forwards and unless they are prepared to “graft," as the professional says, they are bound to throw the team out of gear,
