CONTRACT BRIDGE
By W. E. McKenney
Solution to Previous Contract. Problem
To-day's hand embodies an ex- pecially fine defensive play and was brought to me by C. E. Gunn, one of Cleveland's outstanding younger players. Alertness and export card reading always * are, necessary in completing one of these fine defen- sive plays. Mr. Gunn in the West' opened the king of clubs and when a small card was played from dum- my, Enst allowed the trick to hold. The second club was led and South, the declarer, ruffed with the deuce of hearts.

cashed his ace and king of dia monds, discarding two spades from dummy. His next play whe the deuce of spades.
Mr. Gunn now had a very fine ending on the South hand. He new that South did not hold the ce and queen of spades, or he vould have taken the, spado fin- sse after winning in dummy. He Iso knew that South held no more iamonds otherwise he would have affed the losing diamond with the good heart in dummy,
Therefore, South must hold the ∙ce and x of spades, which would
