We have to look pretty deep for reasons sometimes when a child is mean or cross or cruel.
One Bruce, we'll say, is not a bit nice to Anna Mny, He breaks hor toys and chases her and is the jer- ror of Anna May's life,
His mother cannot understand it, neither can Anna May's mother. The two women aro inseparablo friends and dreamed of their chil dren growing up together and even of marrying someday.
Bruce is fine to other people, or at least he was until recently. Now he is beginning to chase other children occasionally and to kick other dogs, and cats too. He has boen whipped but it does no good. He has been made to tell the little girl he was sorry. He has been put to bed; lectured, shamed-run through the entire gamut of pun- ishment. Yot there is no question that he is getting worse. Each whipping or scolding brings a re- prisal of more bad behaviour.
His mother thought he might be jealous of Anna May. so she ceased making too much fuss over her or her dog. It has helped some but Bruce continues his generally bad conduct.
The answer is clear. Bruce la jealous, not of Anna May, but of Anna May's mother. She takes his mother's time away from him and part of his mother's love.
