HOW THE VERDICTS WENT IN
1104 RACES
WEIGHTS FOR AUSTRALIAN PONIES SHOULD BE REDUCED
Handicaps formed the major part of our progammes at Extra Race Meetinga, and in fact they gave us our best racing; this being the caso. I have purposely given much time in compiling a record of them. I find that, during the year, wo had one hundred and four Handicaps, with the following results:-

In the Australian cines, Portin,';
Night Star and Woodland Stax HETMAN (Mr. A. J.-P. Hward up) carried the maximum weight of

In pas- sing, many will recall that Season races Ticket was asked to carry 180 lbs. but unfortunately the animal- when in a winning position-broke his off fet-lock, and had to be im- mediately destroyed.

A verdict of up to a fongth and a half is considered good handicap- ging and, on this basle, the above results analysed reveal that 70 races (or may 67.3%) come under this catogory, and 34. races (or say 32.7%) were won by a dia- tance of 2 lengths or more.

This Australian, to me, was up to the present, undoubledly the best unimal scen on the course, under racing colours. It was, I understand, through this incident that the Stewards of the Hongkong Jockey Club reduced the maximum weight from 180 lbs. to 170 lbs. for Australian Ponies.

Diana Bay suffered her only reverse at the Annual Meeting, and her defeat can only be described as a tragedy. Her star certainly has not been in the ascondlant this year, and all Sports- men will regret her withdrawal, by the Stowards, from the Autumn Champlone, a race which she could. not possibly have lost. In com- miserating with Mr. Dunbar over his misfortune, we must confe's that the attitude adopted by the Stewards of the Hongkong Jockey Club was the only one that they could take under the circumstances. MR, SOARES' HAPPY MOMENTS,
The "Daily Double" was introduced for the second half of the Season and, as time goes on, this form of gambling will doubtless become very popular with the Public.. The highest dividend actually paid out was $3,322 for the Golden Dragon -Flying Tourist combination, but a record would have been created had the Ration-Widnes double been fancied 'last Saturday. The return would have been $6,173 but, as the last named pony was not backed, this sum was refunded to the 59 ticket holders of Ration in the shape of $104-60 per ticket. It is a little surprising that Widnes was not played at the Daily Double as the pony had 86 backers for a win and 115 for a place in the Pari-mutuels.

Ten Records Broken During
The Season
In the China Pony (Cross-bred) Class five records vere broken this year, Liberty Bay accounting for three, and it may be interesting to mention that this animal broke a record each time he faced the Starter.
Five records were actually broken and one record. equalled in the Australian Class. Rosy Morn's record of 100 13-29 1/5 for the mile and three quarters in the Fremantle 1050 St. Leger is, not, however, an official one, the mare carry- ing 4 lbs. below weight for inches. Woodland Stag's time of 3-35 2/5 remains the official one, and from the details 7430 given below it will be noticed that this time is 24 seconds 2200 slower than that of Liberty Bay, this animal taking 3-32 2150 4/5 to win The Challenge Cup this year in à common 1561 canter.
