THE RIGHT TO EARN
"MARRIED WOMEN'S MÁSS "ATTACK”
HOME LOVE AS MOTIVE
Married women of the country, asalsted by their single sisters from overy walk of life, launched their great "attack" on the question of: their right to earn at the Central Hall, Westminster. The attack" was organised by 29 of the loading women's organisations,
Dame Ethel Smyth, in white and mauve robes of a Doctor of Music, conducted her famous "March of Women."
Mrs. Pethick Lawrence, who presided, said that the old tradition that man and woman were one- and the man was that one, was very much alive to-day, and it was challenge to the right. of the mar ried woman to earn a living.

"German women, married and un- married, have been dismissed from their posts and told by the higher authorities that their one and only function is to exhaust themselves in child-bearing. The triumph of such ideas means that we are head- ing back to the dark ages."
Keeping A Wife
Viscount Buckmaster said they had never demanded that special consideration should be given to women because they were married, They merely asked that they should be given the same treatment as
men.
A
"It is often sold that it is man's duty to keep his wife," he added. "Personally I have often thought that that is the most in- sulting and degrading statement ever heard."
Lady Astor, M.P., said that twelve years ago there were 5,000,- 000 women wage earners in the country; to-day there were 6,000,- 000. Twelve years ago there were 693,000 married women in in- dustry to-day there were nearly 1,000,000..
"Well over half n-milion of the working women," added Lady Astor, "are employed by the State,. and the attitude of the State to- wards them is lower pay, and dis- missal on marriage.
The reason so many women are driven into the labour market is that they have not comfortable homes, and Cannot give their children n good caucation. Far from trying to break up their homes, these women are taking up work to keep the homa fires burn- ing. (Cheors).
