TALE OF TWO CITIES
STORY OF POMPEII AND HERCULANEUM
The atory of the most stupen- dous volcanic eruption that has ever issued from the bowels of the earth was the subject of a broad- cast address by Professor W. Brown of Hongkong University at the Soldiers and Sailors Home last night.
Recent tremors of Vesirvius upon whose flanks amall villages are still flourishing, lent the sub- Ject a topical interest, for Itnly's undertaker has nover ceased to growl and thunder since the tragedy of 79 A.D.
"Wo are concerned to-night." Haid Profesor Brown, "with An ancient tragedy In which
the chief characters were: The Villain, Mt. Vesuvius; The Victim, Pompeil. For people whose tastes are mainly, historical, the emphasis will be on the human side; their concern will be with the luckless city and Its unfortunato in- habitants. Others again, will be Interested chiefly in the volcano."
The lecturer remarked that a volcanic eruption was one of the most dramatic and impressive ex- hibitions of natural forces which could ever be directly experienced: At a depth of 40 or 50 miles below the surface of the earth, the tem- perature is high enough to melt, not only all metals, but all the known rocks. It was at one time believed that at such depths, the earth's interior was actually Quid, but there were now many reasons for rejecting this Iden.
