Local teachers had a field day nt the Helons May Institute yesterday when the Hongkong branch of the English Association held the second meeting of the
Benson.
The subject, "The, teaching of English in Schools," was dealt with exhaustively in a paper read by Miss H, D.. Sawyer, head-mls- treas of the Dloconan Giris' School.
Mr. N. L. Smith, Director of Education and a vice-President of the Association, took the chair, others presont including Pro- fessor Middleton Smith, Professor Simpson, the Hon. K. H. Kotewall. Bishop it. O. Hall, and Mr. G. P. de Martin.

Poetry Made Pleasant.
Often enough it was only the reading aloud of poetry and plays that made them interesting to n class of girls:-"If ye would speake as the best and wisest do, ye must be conversant where the best and wisent are." Silent reading, too. was to be encouraged among the older girls, so long as their choice of books was supervised to some extent; and it would be found that spelling and composition followed naturally on easy reading.

In the discussion which followed, the opinion expressed by a teacher that the old Victorian poems in the local "Crown" and "Royal" readers were unfit to use in teaching was generally approved.
