TEACHING ENGLISH,
ENLIGHTENING LECTURE TO
ENGLISH ASSN.
Local teachers had a field day at the Holena May Institute yesterday when the Hongkong branch of the English Association hold the second meeting of the Benson.
The subject, "The teaching of English in Schools," was dealt with exhaustively in a paper read by Miss H. D. Sawyer, head-miö- tross of the Diocesan Girls' School.
Mr. N. L. Smith,, Director of Education and a vice-President of the Association, took the chair, others prosoat including Pro- fessor Middleton Smith, Professor Simpson, the Hon. K. H. Kotewall. Bishop R. O. Hall,.and Mr. G. P. de Martin.
Quoting from # Board of Education report, Miss Sawyer opened her address with the state- nient that "a liberal education Implies the freeing of the human reason and the development of the and full powers of both body mind" an ideal which was open to all rauks and classve ..
Many of the dificulties of teach- ing Engllah came from slip- shod enunciation. English should bo spoken so purely that it should give no indication of n speaker's origin. Better speech would also rid learners of the delusion that the spelling of the language was difficult.
Poetry Made Pleasant.
Often enough It was only the reading aloud of poetry and plays that made them interesting to n class of girls: "If ye would spenke as the best and wisest do, ye must be conversant where the best and winest are." Silent reading, too, was to be encouraged among tho older girls, so long as their choice of books was supervised là some extent; and it would be found that spelling and composition followed naturally on easy reading.
Going on to grammar, which she said she had taught and had en- joyed lenching all her life, Miss Sawyer said she believed English Grammar was for some years un-

66 T is with the greatest pleasure that I write to testify to the bonefts I have received by taking Phosferine dur ing my training for the 1931 Malayan Weight-Lifting Championships.
As I had to reduce some seven or eight pounds off my normal bodyweight in order to enable me to compete in the -stone class, I had to go into very atronuous training, and with the help of Phosferine, I not only won the cham- pionship, of that class, but also the In- dividual Championship, and, in addition 1 broke a British Record.
now been found necessary again.
Learning by heart both poetry and prose was of great value and was an incentive to dramatisation, but she was inclined to fight shy of text book teaching which did not leave the student anything ta think out alone.
Teaching English to Chinese could be greatly facilitated if instruction were more widely given in phonetics and on this point the Board of Education hod also spinken favourably.
A Local Complaint.

In the discussion which followed, the opinion expressed by a teacher that the old Victorian poems In the local "Crown" and "Royal" renders were unfit to use in teaching was generally approved.
One speaker remarked that they could scareely be called verse and that they were part of an old erature which wa now never used.. No practical регном поw- adays called a fish a "denizon of the deep" when they moant just a plain fish.
Mr. de Martin reminded the audience that "n proposition was a bad thing to end up a sentence with," and he and other speakers Including the chairman, Mr. n. R. A Campbell, Mra, N. Evans. Mr. Handyside, Mrs. Barker, Mr. H. C. Macnamara. and Mr. M. F. Key, thanked the speaker.
