CONTRACT BRIDGE
By W. E. McKenney
When the opening tend can be won by doclarer in either tho dummy or his own hand, he should stop and carefully study the hand before playing to that first trick, as the success of most bridge hands depends upon what is done on the first and second tricks. The following interesting hand which was played in a duplicate contest, gives an example of this point.

The Play
West has the opening lead, and while his heart suit is the strong- trump est, South has bid a no right over him, which makes it look as if South held the ace and queen, therefore West prefers to select another xult and leads spades, the only suit which has not been bid. The ten spot is led. The declarer can win that trick in the dummy with the queen and inimediately fincuse the diamond, but if the diamond finesse fails, or even if East holds the king pro lected, declarer is sure to lose. a diamond, a club, and if the hearts are led through him, a heart.
The success of the hand dependa upon creating a re-entry in dummy in order to discard the losing heart. The proper play is to al law the ten spot to ride to the de- clarer's hand, declarer winning with the ace.
Before leading trump, the de- clarer should next lead the king of clubs. Whether West wins the first or the second club is imma torial. In most cases West won the first club trick with the ace and returned the club right back, hoping to kill the club discard in dummy. Dummy won with the queen and led the six of diamonds, taking the ten spot finesse,
Declarer follows with the ace of diamonds and then the queen. When the nine spút falls from the West hand, declarer knows that West is out of diamonds. Enst wing with the king of diamonds. Now that he is in the lend, his natural return would be a heart, leading to the auit which was bid by his partner, but East realizes "that declarer has set up the jack of clubs for a discard, and should endenvour to at least make it dim- cult for him, and should return the ten of clubs.
Declarer, of course, must de- pend upon West being out or dia- monds and discards the queen of hearts, winning in the dummy with the jack of clubs. The heart is returned from dummy, which the declarer wins with the ace, picks up Enst's remaining din- mond and the rest of declarer's tricka are gooil.
By being careful where he won the first trick, and then establish- ing a card for a discard in dum- my, the declarer has made five od at diamonds.
