SELECTIONS FOR TO-MORROW'S RACE MEETING

Raymond, a 33-1 outsider, owned by Sir Abe Ballay, and ridden by Nicoll, won the Cambridgeshire Race at Newmarket. This picture shows the winner (No. 9) being led in after the rate. (Planet Nows).

SUBSCRIPTION GRIFFINS

EARLY IMPRESSIONS INDICATE PLENTY OF QUALITY

JOTTINGS FROM MY NOTEBOOK

(By "Captain Foster")

It is of course, far too early to say much with my reliance but-broadly speaking-the sub-griffins appear to me, on the whole, to be a good looking lot. These animals were purchased from two separate dealers on an equal basis and, if any judgment of human nature is sound, I feel that, as an outcome of the dealers compoting against each other, we should have some speedy

animals.

Every owner, no matter whom, naturally would like to draw an outstanding pony, but there is no diagulsing the fact that u roal "amasher does materially spoil racing as witness the many enny victories of Rucing Hoy last year.

The "Subs" this year have been a very even lot and in their class produced keen racing much to the enjoyment of owners and specta- tors who closely contested finishes. I wonder whether we shall be as fortunate next year?

The majority of "subs" are doing "work as laid down in the regula- tions"-I have been watching them closely and as time goes on I shall give you the benefit of my observa- tlons-rightly or wrongly.

LIBERTY BAY PRETTY SAFE FOR ST. ANDREW'S STAKES-

L

(By "Captain Foster") ·

IBERTY Bay will canter away with the St. Andrew's Stakes but, apart from this, the Fourteenth Extra Race Meeting promises to provide good racing with

close finishes.

THE meeting opens with the "Ewo" Handicap (Unofficial) a most sporting race and I am told that on the November 30 of each year a similar race is held in Shanghai, Tientsin and Hankow.

IN the Northern parts, they say, the race is considered one of the important social events of the season. The principal of the "Muckle Hoose" at each of these ports is "At Home" to all and sundry at the Grand Stand, and the gathering, as befitting the occasion, is unusually large, Scots predominating. The Bagpipes are played on the spacious club lawns and, I understand, the supply of Haggis is inexhaustible.

For the race at the valley this year, there will be 14 starters and, frankly, I cannot "apot" the win- ner. TIs said that you can give weight but not distance. I notice that the distance handicap this year has been considerably re- duced and Messrs. Nicholls (Mike) and Dinnnen (Stable Secret) go off at the 175 yards mark. Per

hape they may not be too good to follow. Mr. Fiddes Wilson (Two Clubs) will ride at 180 lbs, with a start of 140 yards-weight I fear will put him out of action. Mr. Remedios (Fighting Blood) may be worth

Growe following. Ir, Got Elf), apparently, is out to win the race for the second time In succession.

Canton reports that he has been training very hard, and in this instance the report can be taken truthfully. Last year he went to scale. nt 185 lbs and this year he will ride at the low import of 108 lbs.

Mr. Frost has an excellent chance bir Sunning and we know from ex- perience that one is practically cer- tain of a return whon backing him. As a guess I select the following.

I expect to see a good race between Rosy Morn and City of Brisbane and the 5 lbs. in favour of the latter may just give her the first position. Portia' carries the same weight as Rosy Morn (160 lbs) and I think-apart from the weight, the distance is a shade too long for her to win. She will have to have all the luck to be successful. I shall nct he at all surprised to see Lucy Glitters with the light impost of 143 lbs. Bling the third position. My selections are:

WHAT I THINK OF THE “AUSSIE” SUBS

HALF A DOZEN PONIES OF GREAT PROMISE

"DINTY" AND THE FOUR WHITE LEGS FALLACY

(By "Captain Foster")

Our very progressive Stewards can be congratulated in having bought auch a splendid consignment of Australians for our next Annual Meeting. They are freely admitted to be the finest shipment since the introduction in 1931 of Australian pony racing-as apart from "Walers"-to the Colony, and I am definitely of the opinion that every existing record will be shattered in 1934.

The majority of these animals Princess Angeline and Just That, are now doing good healthy work,These two mares are, I gather, and, if my judgment does not mis- full sisters and on their shape, lend me, I think the following

animals will be well in the limelight should gallon. I rather fancy the when the time comes for them to Princess of the two and, as she is. make their bow to the public:- in the Dunbar stable, one can de

MY SIX AGAINST THE REST.

Were I now asked to make my selection of half a dozen on thi basis on their annual Butter at home between "Rapler" (the one and only) and "Robin Goodfellow" of each selecting a dozen horses, I would pick the following, six against the rest of the "subs"

This fallacy, however, has this year been exploded by "Hyperion"-also with four white legs-acknowledged to be the best three year old in Eng- land, and winner of the Derby and St. Leger for Lord Derby in fact he went through the acason with an unbroken win- ning record.

Diaty was very troublesome to begin with but under management Nell Groyn-Atlas-Princess in the Dunbar stable has sobered Angeline Just That-Bronze down considerably. Era and Diaty.

We should see another good race here. Widnes appears to have gone off recently. The Goat should I have come to the conclusion that go close to winning and I think

Sir-Fifty three years ago I WUB 1 young constable in the Shrewsbury Constabulary. The race meetings were held in Novem- ber each year, and in the year men- tioned I was one of six constables selected for mounted duty to keep the course clear,

I was mounted on a thorough- bred race-horse which had been

a sporting gentleman realding at Bridgenorth, near Shrewsbury.

Wakefield is very much fantoaned to the Chief Constable by cied, but I cannot possibly see hlm beating Alexandra Hall, who is my selection,

Tillicum carrics 9 lbs. less than ho did last time out. The distance suits him ard ho will surely give a good account of himself by being nçar at the finish. Royal Flush's weight is down 7 lbs, as compared with his previous run and he also has a chance. Tenorio is definite- ly in the hunt and I make him very dangerous. Mon Tallaman cannot be completely ignored, nor can Gold Ring be entirely eliminated. Bla tro and Jungle Jim may find the distance too short for them. A good start will make all the differ ence between winning and loaing, but I will stand on the following:-

Alexandra Hall.

Tenorio, ma Tillicum or Royal Flush,

On the first day of the mout. Ing (Monday), going from the old market place, Shrewsbury, to the racecourse, the Chief Constable was unable to control his mount, and arriving at the racecourse. I was ordered to dismount and ex- change horses with the Chief... Constable,

I was ordered to take up my position quite near the starting point. The first race of the day: Fred Archer and three other riders cama cantering down the course. On their passing me I had the greatest difficulty in controlling my horse. He wanted to be off with them,
