LORRY'S MISHAP

CORONER'S INQUIRY INTO ACCIDENT

That the driver had swerved to nvold a man crossing the rond, was the story advanced, by one of the witnesses when Mr, Hamilton yesterday afternoon hold Coroner's Inquiry Into the death of Lwo scaffolding workmen, Cheung Sam-tal and Ho Kan, who wore killed when the lorry in which they were travelling crashed; through the wall on-Island Road i near Aberdeen, and plunged eighty.feet down a precipice, on October 27.

The Coroner, addressing" the jury, said that there was no rea-]. son to inquire into both deaths, as the facts were the same, and his proposed they should inquire into the death of Cheung Sam-tai. The lorry, No, 261, he said, was proceeding to Stanley with a lond of bamboo poles. Another lorry was proceeding ahead on the saino errand. When opposite the old brickworks past Aberdeen the lorry failed to take a left hand bend, and plunged through the wall and fell some eighty feet on to the rocka on the foreshore beneath. The two victims wore killed, and the driver was still in hospital.

Medical Evidence,

Dr. L. D.. Pringle, Government Medical Officer, temporarily in charge of Victorin mortuary, sald that he conducted a post mortem! examination оп the body of Cheung, Sam-tal on October 28. He found the cause of death was due to multiple injuries with shock and haemorrhage. Cheung Chow, a coolle travell ing in the lorry ahend, then gove evidenco, and said that seven' fokis had loaded the two lorries with about 600 bamboo poles each, be fore they started off. They had often taken about the same number of poles. He found the body of Cheung Sam-tal lying clear of the lorry after the accident, with polen arotind him. He was dead.

Before proceeding with the next witness, the Coroner rend the statement taken from the driver,.. which was, in part, that he had been asked by Ali Po to act as his substitute in driving the lorry that morning. They-set-out for Stanley about 2.30 p.m., and ho was following the other lorry all the time His speed was about 20 miles an hour. When rounding The bend he saw four men on the left side of the road and three on the sea side of it. He drove to. wards the sen side and started to | go through, and when about four feet away from the men on the sen wide one of them rushed across the rond. He swerved to his right, but could not stop before colliding with the wall. The lorry went over. He had been driving thia lorry on previous occasions.

Went Over With Lorry. Chan Hoi, a learner driver, who was sented with the driver in thei cab, said that the lorry was driven by Wo Tat-sam, who had been ask- ed to act as a substitute to the re Kular driver. DEATH OF MR. GEORGE PAYNE.

Mr. Payne was playing-tonuis on tho Naval Yard. 'Courts' when ho suddenly collapsed. He was Lakon to the Naval Surgory whore "he' expired. Death was due to heart failuro.

The late Mr. Payne, who was only 04 years of age, leaves a wife and small son to mourn the long. He has been in the Colony for about two years and during this time has become a popular figure. Ho 'was a member of the Y.M.C.A; Male Voice Choir and also on the committee of the Dockyard Recron-, tion Club.

A native of Portsmouth, the late Mr. Payne was, prior to coming out here, in the Director of Naval Construction branch of the · Ad- miralty.

The funeral will pass the Mone- ment at o'clock this afternoon.

Death In London After Long

Military Career.

London, Nov. 15. The denth has occurred of Brig Gen. Sir Henry. Grey Dixon, K.C.B., C.D.—Our Own Correspon- dent.

Born in August, 1850, Sir Henry had a long and varied mill- tary career, seeing Horvice in many parts of the world and act- Ing as A.D.C. to. Queen. Victorla and then to King Edward.

He was the third son of the late Col. John Dixon, Royal Scots, of Astle Inll, Cheshire, and was eduenteil at Bridgeman's and Woolwich, joining the 25th Regi- ment in 1868,

He served in the Afghan War of 1878-80 being mentioned in despatches and decorated; in the Sudan War, being present at the action of Gamalzah. He was again mentioned in despatches and received a medal and clasp,,, the bronze star, and the 4th Class of the Order of Medjidic. He took part in the operations of 1889 on the Nile.

Subsequently he was transferred with his regiment to India, wher he was engaged in fighting at Chi- tral, again earning distinction be-i ing created C.B. and decorated for

The South African War aguin saw him in action from 1901-02 at the end of which time he had conferred upon, him the dignity of Knight Commander of the Bath
