She jumped up, threw her mauve cloak on a rocky ledge, and ran to Leonard followed her, the gen.

"But you won't tell me now?" "Well, I'll tell you this. Misé Fyno was in trouble, and I wanted to assist her."

"Forgiven," said Beryl Haines, "I reckon poor Mias Fyne needs all the assistance that's going."

Her sympathetic tone, with its genuine ring, warmed him..

"I'm glad to hear you speak like that," he commented.

"And why shouldn't I speak like that, pray? Do you think I wouldn't assist her, If I could?”

"I'm sure you would. And- what's more-I'm sure you can."

"In vulgar parlonce, shoot!" she responded. "How can I help her?" "By sticking on at the Mermaid Hotel, for one thing." "We're going to."

"Good. By helping to keep the place cheerful, for another thing. Though it seeme to nie you do that already."

Thanks. Tu queque, whatever that means."

"And by-by being ready- for—"

He paused, and hesitated.

"Go on, go on!" she cried, "Don't stop just when it's getting really interesting! What am I to be ready for?"

"To tell you the truth, I hardly know," answered Leonard. "But I've a strong notion that, before you and I are many hours older, Miss Haines, things are going to happen at the Mermaid Hotel. And, if they do happen, well, the
