"Rasputin and the Empress"

"Rasputin and the Empress," pro- bably the most discussed motion picture of the year, will be shown fram to-morrow at the Queen's following its nueconsful run at the Astor Theatre in New York and ex- tended showings in the principal cities of the United States. John, Ethel and Lionel Barrymore are starred là the three principal roles of the pro- duction, appearing together for the first time on the screen during their respective carECIA

"Rasputin and the Empress" is based on an original story by Charles MacArthur, well known for its work on "The Front Page," "Lulu Bolle" and other stage and screen dranias. The picture was directed by Richard Boleslavsky,.author of "The Way of a Lancer" and "Lances Down" and for several years following his earlier work with the Moscow Art Theatre, a prominent figure in Hollywood.

The Alm is sald to present with Adelity the personal detalls of the enreer of Russia's "Holy Devil," from his birth in a peasant community in Siberin through his rise to power, his association with the Czarina and

is mysterious control

of the Ro. mano court.

John Barrymoro has the part of Prince Chegolleff, intimate friend of the Czar and Czarina. Ethel Bar- rymore plays the Czarina, while Lionel Barrymore, inst seen in "The Washington Masquerade" and before that in "Grand Hotel," is seen as Rasputin. The role of the Czar is led by Ralph Morgan, and that of the little Czaravlth by Tad Alexander. Both Morgan and Alexander were recently seen in "Strange Interlude,' Other Important roles are played by Diana Wynyard, the English stage star, C. Henry Gordon and Edward Arnold.

In "Rasputin and the Empress," Ethel Barrymore makes her firat ap- peurance in a dialogue picture and has her first film role in a mamber of years. Her recent vehicles on the legitimate stage Include "Scarlet Sis- ter Mary," "The Kinkdont of God," "The School for Scandal", and "The Constant Wife."

Although Miss Barrymore_has_not previously appeared in a production with her two brothers, John and Llan- el were seen in joint roles in "Grand Hotel" and "Arsene Lupin."

Alexander Toluboff, Russlan archi- test, anslated in planning and desir- ning the ambitious court and cathe- dral backgrounds for the picture, which are sald to be among the most Apectacular of any utilized in a talking picture.

"The Kid from Spain"

Seventy-six beautiful eborus girls are far more difficult costume for a big screen musical comedy like Eddie Cantor's "The Kid from Spain" than ten thousand soldiers for a six- month campaign

For one costume alono, the black lace gowns in which the Goldwyn Girls are first seen at the King's Theatre, sixty women worked for three weeks at the Samuel Goldwyn costume department, sewing together the spider-web thinness of the mister!- al and working in the trimming. So delicate and fragile is the material that the gowns could not be stored on hangers.

"The Good Companions" Those favouring the happy ending to their entertainment, and most people prefer it that way, will be interested to know whother, in the film of "The Good Companions" Susic Dean in kinder to Inigo Jollifant than she is in the novel,

It will be remembered that in the novel Susie leaves Inigo rather in the al. If nobody else turns up she may marry him. The problem was rather a dimeult one for the direc- tor, Victer Saville, If in the finale of the film the pair were completely happy, he was altering the novel, thereby incurring the wrath of the critics. If on the other hand, he faithfully followed the novel, he might conceivably disappoint those who had not read the book and preferred their Ala

farc to end with a hint of orange blossonie

In a quandary, the director tom- porised, and those noelng the film will find that Suslo is much kinder to Inigo and that into the concluding acenes of the fi may bo read their ultimate happiness,

The clin Jessie Matthews plays the role of Susie Dean, whilst John Gielgud plays Inigo Jollifant. Other characters are splendidly presented by Edmund Gwann (Jess Dakroyd), Mary Glynne (Miss Trant), Percy Parsons (Morton Milcham) and A. W. Baskcomb (Jimmlo Nunn),

"The Good Companiona" will be shown at the King's Theatre on Friday,

WORLD CRISIS

A WAY OUT

By FREDERICK COPE, A.M.I.E.E,

Mr. Cope's striking articles on the world economic crisis which were recently published in the Hongkong Telegraph are now available in pamphlet form.

One of the features, repaying study, is the close similarity between the plan of reform suggested by this local writer,

and certain aspects of the Roosevelt recovery programme. The author's ideas are naturally far too advanced for active promotion at the present time, but they are particularly interesting in view of the fact that President Roosevelt, in striking out on a path of his own, has travelled in the same direction.

The pamphlet is one of forty-four pages and can be obtained from the South China Morning Post at a cost of--
