John Barrymore has the part of Prince Chegodieff, intanate friend of the Czar and Czarina. Ethel Bar- rymore plays the Czarina, while Lionel Barrymore, last seen in "The Marquerte" and, before

in "Grand Hotel," is seen as Rasputin. The role of the Czar is Sled by Ralph Morgan, and that of the little Czarevith by Tad Alexander. Both Morgan and Alexander were recently seen in "Strange Interlude." Other important roles are played by Diana. Wynyard, the English singe star, C. Henry Gordon and Edward Arnold,

In "Rasputin and the Empress," Ethel Barrymore makes her first ap- pearance in a dialogue picture and has her first film role in a number of years. Her recent vehicles on the legitimate stage include "Scarlet Sis- ter Mary," "The Kinkdom of God," "The-School-for, Scandal" and "The Constant Wife."

Although Miss Barrymore has not previously appeared in a production with her two brothers, John and Lion el were seen in joint roles in "Grand Hotel" and "Arsene Lupin."

Alexander Tolubeff, Russian archi teet, analsted in planning and denig- ning the ambitious court and cathe. dral backgrounds for the picture, which are said to be among the most spectacular of any utilized in a talking picture,

"The Kid from Spain" Seventy-six beautiful chorus girls are far more difficult to costume for a big screen musical comedy like Eddie Cantor's "The Kid from Spain' than ten thousand soldiers for a six. month campaign.

For one costume alone, the black lace gowns in which the Goldwyn Girls are. Bråt seen at the King's Theatre, sixty women worked for three weeks at the Samuel Goldwyn contume department, sewing together the spider-web thinness of the nateri- al and working in the trimming. So delicate and fragile is the material that the gowns could not be stored on hangers.

"The Good Companions" Those favouring the happy ending to their entertainment, and most people prefer it that way, will be Interested to know whether, in the Alin of The Good Companions". Sualo Dean la kinder to Inigo Jallifant than sho is in the novel.

It will be remembered that in the novel Susic leaves Inigo rather in the air. If nobody else turns up ahe may marry him. The problem was rather a difeult one for the direc Lor, Victor Saville. If in the finale of the film the pale were completely happy, he was altering the navel, thereby incurring, the wrath of the critics. If on the other hand, ho followed the novel, he might

cy disappoint those who had

not read the book and preferred their film faro to end with a hint of orange blossoms.

cand

In a quandary, the director tem- ported, and those seeing the alm will find that Buxle is much kinder to Inigo and that into the concluding i acenos of the film may be read their ultimate happiness.

The olfin Jesale Matikows plays the ! role of Susie Dean, whilst John Gielgud plays Inigo Jolifant. Other characters are splendidly presented by Edmund Gwenn (Jess Onkroyd), Mary Glynne (biles Teant) Percy Parsons (Morton Mitcham) and A. W. Baskoomb (Jimmie Nunn).

"The Good Companions" will be shown at the King's Theatre Friday,

WORLD CRISIS

A WAY OUT

By FREDERICK COPE, A.M.1.É.E.

Mr. Cope's striking articles on the world economic crisis 'which were recently published in the Hongkong. Telegraph

are now available. In pamphlet form.

One of the features, repaying study, is the close similarity between the plan of reform suggested by this local writer,

and certain aspects of the Roosevelt recovery programme. The author's ideas are naturally far too advanced for active. promotion at the present timo, but they, are particularly ́`· interesting in view of the fact that President Roosevelt, in striking out on a path of his own, has travelled in the same direction.

The pamphlet is one of, forty-four pages and can be obtained from the South China Morning Post at a cost of-
