U.S. RECOVERY

IMPEDED BY MANY STRIKES

Washington, Sept. 20. Widespread strikes Involving 00,000 workers in various Indus- tries in New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey are worrying Pre- sident Roosevelt and his assistanta In the National Recovery Drive,

These strikes Involve a serious Impairment of purchasing power when it is most needed to speed up business and re-employment.

-An uncertain factor is whether President Roosevelt will use infla- tion to increase purchasing power. Conflict of public opinion is dis- closed on this point.

Mr. Henry Harriman, President of the U.S.A, Chambers of Com- merce is of the opinion that Pre- sident Roosevelt does not want money inflation but credit Infla- tion, which ho regards as being very Hound..

Arrangements have already been made for commencing the construc- tlon of 37 warships, including four 10,000 ton cruisers and involving an expenditure of £47,000,000.

Fears that this three year build- ing programme might provoke a naval construction race in other countries were described as un- justified by Mr: H. L. Roosevelt, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Department, in a broadcast speech. -Renter.

The troubio between the Papal Nuncio and the Government arose when Msgr. Ciraeci wrote to the leader of the Slovak Popular Party, complaining that he had, beau in- aulted in Praguo.
