A SCIENTIFIC CLASH

IS THE UNIVERSE

EXPANDING?

FAMOUS RIVALS TO DEBATE

There will inevitably be a sharp conflict of opinion between three of the world's greatest mathema-| tical astronomers at this year's meeting of the British. Association,

They will air their rival views, on the "expandingness” or other-i I wise of the universe, and of the end to which is moving. The chief contenders will be:

L'Abbe Lemaitre, the famous Belgian astronomer, who started the whole trouble by his discovery that the universe as designed by Einstein was unstable. Ho will travel specially from Belgium to take part in the controversy:

Sir Arthur Eddington, who be lieves that he has discovered a clue to why the universe is ex- panding at the particular rate which it now appears to be doing;| and

Professor E. A. Milne, 'of Oxford- University, who will argue that} the whole idea of the expanding universe, as Sir Arthur and l'Ábbe Lemaitro concelve it, is all wrong, and that "space before Einstein" is quite good enough for even a mathematical astronomer. This will be the first occasion that Pro- fessor. Milne has taken part in a public discussion of his latest) theory,

Professor Milne, with a plea for n "common sense" view, claims to have proved that the material bodies of the universe would in any case inevitably scatter, just as a swarm of mosquitoes, flying at random and with no particular liking for each others' company would be expected to spread out.
