Sergeant Darkin, the officer in charge of the launch, and Sub-Inspector Wright, scrambled aboard the water-boat, understood to have been the No. 1 boat of the Union' Waterbout Company, before the launch sank, but the other mem- bers of the crew went into the water as the vessel foundered.
A heavy rain was sweeping through the Harbour at the time of the collision, visibility being very bad. The No. 6 launch saw the water-boat suddenly loom up in the darkness, but too "Inte avoid the crash.
