TRIAL OF SHENG AN PIRATES

PORT ARTHUR COURT PREPARED

JAPANESE LAWYER

MAY DEFEND .‚ ̈

- Dairen, Sept. 2. Router learns from an official of the District Court here that trial of the fiva forolgners involved in the piracy of the sa. Shong An early in July will be held some time early in September.

Local officials hayo not decided yot on an exact dato, but they have temporarily named the District Court In Port Arthur as the seat for the trial.

A number of local citizens who are interested in the caso may yet petition the officials to have the caso tried in the now District building, which was completed only inst month, in Tankaton, half way between Dairen City and Hoshi- gaura, Dairen's’noted summor re- Bort.

ACCUSED KEPT SECLUDED. Reuter curns that the Japanese officials are agreeable to the accus- ed having a lawyer to defend them. Should they, however, fail to nonio their counsel or counsels before the local

the date of the trial, court will appoint a Japanese law- yer to defend them.

The buccaneers, who have been in Jail in Dairen for two months now, are still kept in seclusion. No word has been received from them and no word apparently has reached them.

Officials guarding the prisoners are understood to have refused all interviewers as well as gifts intend ed for the accused.

The pirates wore charged early this month with murder and rob- bory, piracy being included in the latter charge.

They

were arrested here on July 1 when the Chinese steamship Sheng An was run ashore and the discovery made that the vessel had been pirated and ten persons aboard It murdered.
