TO-DAY'S QUOTATIONS

The following is the list of local share quotations issued to-day:

Banks.

According to Messrs. Swan, Cul. bertson and Fritz, the Now York market was irregular yesterday. Business done 2,170,000 shares. The Wall Street Journal report on yoster- day's market: The market closed irre. gular after swinging within a wide nren. Heavy profit-taking developed in goldmining shares which spread boardwide due to disappointing res- ponse to gold ruling and even repcal issues wenkened despite the result of the elections in the State of Washing- ton. Call money was caster due to Federal Reserve Banks buying Gov- ornment Securities and pumping to dit into banks forcing rates down.. The Stock Exchange voted for extend- ed delivery time to two days effective Magazine" na of Sept. 8. Ironage

A7% of reports steel production at capacity which la partly attributable to prior purchases for stocking pur- poses and also uncertainties of na tional readjustment to the National Recovery Act. There is nothing to suggest a change of trend outside of a seasonal upturn in automobile pro- duation. Our New York Office cable (This morning) Stocks: A profession al market which moved within yeater. day's limits with oils acting well. Wheat: The market recovered sharp- ly on culmination of September 11- quidation and on oversold conditions. Nown continues bullish. Buying po- wer is better and purchases are aug. gested on the constructive alde. Col ton: The market shows partial res ponse to action of other market but posscases no initiative of its own. Apparently a new incentive is neces sary and with inflation talk again sub- siding a small trading market is quite probable with lower tondency. Silver: The niarket was weaker during the day in sympathy with other commodi- tica but was higher before the close,

WORLD CRISIS

A WAY OUT

By FREDERICK COPE, A.M.I.E.E.

1 Mr. Cope's striking articles on the world economic crisis which were recently published in the Hongkong Telegraphi "are now available in pamphlet form.

One of the features, repaying study, is the close similarity between the plan of reform suggested by this local writer. and certain aspects of the Roosevelt recovery programme. The author's ideas are naturally far too advanced for active promotion at the present time, but they are particularly Interosting in view of the fact that President Roosevelt, in striking out on a path of his own, has travelled in the same direction.

The pamphlet is one of forty-four pages and can be obtained from the South China Morning Post at a cost of-
