CONTRACT BRIDGE
By W. E. McKenney
I have recently written to a number of the country's leading contract players asking them for an Interesting hand, so I want to give you to-day the hand which was sent to me by Mr. Roberl W. Halpin of Chicago, a past- president of the American Bridge| Lengue.
Mr. Halpin was captain of the team which represented the Auc- tion Bridge Club of Chicago, which club presented the trophy for national open contract teams. of-four. Mr. Halpin and his teammates proceeded to win this trophy the first year it was put into play-1029. Mr. Halpin says that the mistake made by a great many contract players is in not providing for a bad trump dis- tribution. In the following hand the carelses declarer would try toj make the hand by simply setting
up the club suit by ruffing one

West's opening lead was the ten of diamonds, the queen wàs played from dummy and when Enst play- ed the ace, South was forced to ruff with the seven of hearts.
Mr. Halpin, figuring that he might get a bad split in trump, now led the three of spades and took the finesse, East winning with the king. East returned the seven of spades which Mr. Halpin won in dummy with the

He then led the four of din monds from dummy and trumped with the eight of hearts. Ho eashed his ace and jack of hearts and then led a small club, winning in dummy with the king.
The king and queen of hearts were played from dummy, Mr. Hal- pin discarding two clubs from his own hand. Ho led the king of dia- monda and discarded his other losing club.
He returned to his own hand by leading a spade and winning with the jack, and then played his ace and queen of clubs for the last two tricks, successfully making his small alam contract.
